Amnesty Calls For Australia To Put Pressure on Burma

"Amnesty International is calling on Australia to condemn rights violations taking place in Burma in the lead up to elections next month.

The human rights group says focusing on free and fair elections in Burma is not enough.

Amnesty's campaign co-ordinator, Jenny Leong, says Prime Minister Julia Gillard should raise the issue when she attends a meeting of Asian and European leaders in Brussels next week."

Focussing on "free and fair elections" is certainly not enough, but is Australia really prepared to take any meaningful measures at all? And if they were, what would the motivation be?
