Asylum, Detention and Democracy in Australia

[RAP: Julian Burnside gives an excellent account, based on his work with asylum seekers, of the effects of detaining innocent and traumatized adults and children and treating them as criminals in order to discourage other innocent and traumatized people from asking us for help. Some of what he has to say provides some context for recent incidents in Australian detention centres such as the unaccompanied children scuffling and the self-harm and suicide, most recently of Ahmad Al Akabi  this morning and the protests that resulted from it. There are more parts to these presentations available from the source]
